Decide what needs to change
Start with the destination for your picture. If a landscape layout cuts off an important subject, you may need more scene around the photo. If the whole photo fits but is too large in pixels, resizing is enough. If an unwanted edge is the problem, cropping may be the better operation.
| What you need | Use |
|---|---|
| Continue a scene beyond its borders | AI image expansion |
| Change width and height in pixels | Resize Image |
| Remove edges and keep a chosen composition | Crop Image |
| Add transparent or solid-color margins | Expand Image Canvas |
This guide focuses on AI outpainting. The model creates a likely continuation from visible context; it cannot reveal the exact scene that existed outside a cropped image.
Step 1 — Choose a suitable source image
Use a JPG, PNG, or WebP with enough detail around the borders to explain the scene. Continuous sky, water, ground, and walls often provide clearer context than a border filled with cut-off text, faces, hands, or complex machinery.
The current uploader accepts files up to 10 MB and 24 megapixels. File type is checked against the actual bytes. Converting a broken or unsupported file by changing its extension will not make it a valid image.
Keep a separate copy of the source. Avoid submitting private or sensitive images unless you are comfortable with third-party processing.
Step 2 — Choose where to add background
Choose All sides to create space around the image. Choose Left, Right, Top, or Bottom when the layout needs room mainly on one edge. Direction determines the source image's anchor: expanding left places the original toward the right, for example.
The target aspect ratio and expansion amount also affect the amount of new space. A directional choice sets an anchor; it does not promise that every other edge will remain flush when the target frame has a different shape. Inspect the canvas before generating.
Step 3 — Choose an aspect ratio
- 1:1 makes a square frame for tiles, product cards, and square posts.
- 4:3 creates a balanced landscape frame for presentations and general imagery.
- 16:9 provides a wide frame for banners, slides, and landscape screens.
- 9:16 creates a vertical frame for mobile layouts and story-style content.
These are shape presets, not guarantees about a particular social network's current specifications. Check the destination's required size and safe areas separately.
Turning a portrait into a landscape image generally requires more new content on the sides. Turning a landscape into a vertical frame generally needs more space above and below. Keep the original subject large enough to remain useful in the final composition.
Step 4 — Set the expansion amount
The range controls how much of the target canvas the original image occupies. A lower percentage makes the source relatively smaller and leaves more new background to generate. A higher percentage keeps the source larger within the new frame.
Start with a moderate extension, especially when the source has detailed edges. Generating a much larger scene from a small original leaves the model with less context and more area to invent.
The tool displays the actual target dimensions after upload. The original keeps its proportions, but may be scaled to fit the generated canvas. AI expansion is therefore not a method for guaranteeing that every original pixel remains unchanged.
Step 5 — Generate and wait for a real result
Choose Generate expansion when the canvas is ready. The browser prepares an image and mask, then the server validates the submission and sends the prepared data to the configured provider.
Generation can take more than a minute. Keep the page open while the request is in progress. The interface blocks duplicate submissions and does not automatically repeat a paid generation when a request fails.
When the environment has no provider configuration, generation returns an unavailable message. The sample preview remains a demonstration and is never offered as a successful result from your upload.
Step 6 — Review, compare, and download
On desktop, use the comparison handle to inspect the aligned original and result. On a phone, use the Before and After controls. Look closely at the boundary where new content meets the source, then inspect the rest of the generated region.
Check these details before use:
- Repeated trees, windows, products, or people.
- Bent lines, inconsistent perspective, and broken shadows.
- Changed faces, hands, lettering, logos, or fine product details.
- Abrupt color changes, visible seams, or uneven textures.
Download becomes available only after a real image has been returned and its aspect ratio matches the target. The provider may return a different resolution; the result badge shows its actual pixel dimensions, and the download keeps that native size without stretching. Changing direction, ratio, or expansion amount makes the previous result stale.
If an expansion fails or looks wrong
The image is rejected before generation
Check its format, byte size, and pixel count. Try opening it in another image application and exporting a fresh JPG, PNG, or WebP. A damaged image or mismatched file signature will fail validation.
The service is unavailable or busy
A missing provider configuration, concurrency limit, or exhausted quota can prevent generation. Keep the source and settings, wait if appropriate, and retry manually. Repeated clicking will not make the provider process faster.
A request times out
A timeout means the site did not obtain a usable result within its request window. It does not prove the provider canceled its work or that a charge was reversed. Check any applicable provider or site usage policy before submitting another request.
The result has the wrong dimensions
The requested dimensions are a provider input, not a guarantee of native output resolution. A different resolution is accepted only when it matches the requested ratio within one pixel of integer rounding and stays within the file and pixel limits. The preview and download preserve the actual returned dimensions without stretching or cropping. Larger ratio differences are rejected, with requested and returned dimensions shown when available.
The result contains visual errors
Use a smaller expansion, choose a source with clearer edge context, or change the framing. If a blank margin is acceptable, canvas expansion gives a predictable border without invented scenery.
Continue with the right finishing tool
Use Resize Image when your reviewed result needs exact final dimensions. Use Crop Image to tighten the composition. Each finishing tool processes the image locally and exports PNG; keep the source generation separately if you want to compare versions.
